Great Job!  You remembered to come directly to this page when you sat down!

Today is one of the MOST IMPORTANT LESSONS I will give you all year!  You will absolutely need to MEMORIZE the information you learn today, and I will be quizzing you on it next monday.  

I will be walking you through the basic structure of an internet webpage today.  Please remember (when we get to the actual work time today) that one of your grades in this class is based on how much you help those around you when they get stuck.  I will have a very unique way of coming up with this grade that I will share with you later.  Once you finish your work, look around at the people sitting next to you and ask how you can help.  We MUST work as a team in order to develop a deep knowledge of web design this semester.  

By the end of the class today you will be able to do the following:

1. Create a basic webpage that consists of the HTML Skeleton, a title, a heading, and a paragraph.
2. Save an html file.
3. Open an HTML file in a browser.


Below, you will see that I have embedded the full powerpoint presentation I am about to give you today in case you need to review at a later time.

Welcome to the Language of the Internet!

Hello Web Designers!  Welcome to The Language of the Internet!  This class is all about how to create new and original content on the internet!   In this class you will learn how to make a website from scratch.  You will learn how to speak and write the special code, called HTML, that is behind most of the world's greatest websites.  The skills you will learn over the next few months in this class can be used in a million different creative ways for the rest of your life.  I have had students tell me that they hope to pursue Web Design as a career after they discover how fun HTML coding can be.  

This website (http://thelanguageoftheinternet.weebly.com) will be your home base whenever you come to class from now on.  I will post all the instructions and materials for your daily assignments on this web site.  From now on you should come directly to this assignments page when you get to 6th period.  Often times I will have a mini-lesson to give after you have read your assignment for the day.  Other times you will simply continue with the pervious day's assignment without a mini-lesson.  Either way, you check the assignments page first.   Your grade in this class will be determined by the following key areas:

1. Completing the Daily Assignments on-time.
2. Memorizing the small skills so you can be productive and creative.
3. Helping others fix their Code.
4. Meeting our Long-Term Design Objectives.
5. Being Resourceful Problem Solvers (finding solutions on the internet, or from friends, to fix coding problems you are having).

In addition to using this website as an instructional tool, all of my 6th period students are being sponsored this semester by an amazing organization called Treehouse.  Treehouse has donated thousands of dollars worth of instructional videos, projects, online activities, and user accounts for our class.  All of these materials are designed to teach you how to use HTML, CSS, and Javascript in a real-world way. What this means for us is that we get to go even deeper into what it means to be a web designer than previously would have been possible.  I know you are going to LOVE IT!

First: In order to be in this class you must have a yahoo! email account.  This is NOT OPTIONAL.  I will work with you today to make sure you get one.  If you already have a yahoo email address, log-in to it right now.  If not, click here.  Sign up for a Yahoo! email account.

    After you have set up your Yahoo! email account, I need your email address below.

Second: Watch the Brainpop video called "The Internet."  This video will help you begin to understand how the internet works.  Once you have watched it, please take the "graded quiz" and email your results to [email protected].  Click HERE to watch a brainpop video called "The Internet."  

Third: Watch the following video about the internet.  Then complete the assignment below.
